How to make a purse :

First buy two square patches of fabric.
Then cut short strips along the edges knot along three sides making sure that you leave a spot for an opening to put things in.
For the strap tie a string of yarn or other material to one of the strips.

Now you have a purse!

My friend Captain Sandy Seagull was in Antigua. We had the whole town crowded around us selling tableclothes, flutes, jewlery and much more; saying "buy now, for a friend, for an enemy?!" All I could do was laugh as Sandy was struggling through the crowd.

Today's blog is about the animals that live here in Guatemala.

Ocelots

The Ocelots hind legs have flexible joints to make climbing easy. All cats except the Cheetah and Flat-Headed cat have retractile claws.

Jaguars

Jaguars have lost their habitat in three countries from pollution.

Black jaguars are not seen quite as much as the spotted.

I enjoyed learning these facts with you.

*Since I am a cat lover I picked these big cats. There are over 250 species of mammals in Guatemala.

Be Like a Guatemalan!

Guatemlan's have a good taste in food.

What you can see here are plantains, chile rellenos, shrimp (camarrones), tomales and tortillas! Yum!

I saw these little dolls and I though they were cute. These dolls are called worry dolls, or trouble dolls. A child that cannot sleep because they are worried about something can tell the doll all their worries and troubles. They put it under their pillow and in the morning, they wake up without worry!

First of all, I really like the Mayan style!!

the traditional style is fabulouso!

Very colorful!

Each village has their own pattern of clothing so you can tell a person's hometown just by lookg at them.
Second, I like the old ruins. They tell you alot about history.

Hermit Crab Discovery

Yesterday I was swimming in the marina's pool and I found this hermit crab at the bottom of the pool. I picked it up and ran into the bathroom and washed it off. I found out that the crab was dead. The chlorine killed it. So, I pulled the crab out of it's shell and discovered it had a soft body inside the shell.

I asked my mom if we could study the crab. So today, I went online and looked up the anatomy of a hermit crab. These are my findings:

Abdomen = Belly
Telson = The tip of the tail
Gonopores = Female
No Gonopores = Male
Both male and female have 5 pairs of legs and groom their gills.
Males have a smooth tail while females have tiny hairs called pleopods.

Hermit Crabs can live up to 40+ years.

My hermit crab turned out to be a female with noticeable gonopores and pleopods.

This was the most fun I have had doing a science project.

Dolphin Research Center

Marathon consists of many different keys. To the Northeast of us is Grassy Key, whee the Dolphin Research Center is.

My mom and I went with Ms. Sandy and our friend Tiffany! We had so much fun watchin the dolphins swim and dance and watch us. Dolphins actually lay on their side and "people watch", looking up at us with one eye.

Marathon

Living in Marathon is real fun.

I had my birthday party at Sombrero Beach. You get there by dinghying up Sister's Creek. The theme of the party was Hawaiian and we were hula skirts and leis (necklace). Since I have lived here I have made many friends, Christian and Tiffany and Kaya and Colleen. They came to my party and we hit the pinata. My Dad made hamburgers and hot dogs, and we played volleyball with the grown ups. Just at the last whack on the pinata, the rain started to come down. We all ran to the public restroom area, and hid under the awning. We laughed because how many parties have you been to that were at the bathroom? Ha ha ha.

October What a Busy Month

We went to the Planetarium and saw what the night's sky would be showing. We learned about Pliedes, a cluster of 7 stars. A constellation. I learned that stars twinkle while planets just shine, shine, shine!

We stayed at Miami Marina. There was a cold front, which means the weather is bad. It was cold and very windy.

We also visited Vizcaya. It was kind of by accident we thought we were going to the Science Museum.

It was a beautiful house that was built in the 1920's that is now a National Historical Landmark.

Vero Beach

We left home on Friday night.

We are motoring down the river.

Things I do while we are on the boat are, Watch dolphins from the bow of the boat and my friend caught a fish!

Right now we are in Vero Beach. I rode my bike with my mom and dad all the way to publix! We had to ride over a huge bridge!

I will post some photos later on. Right now we are at a Marina doing laundry and getting some internet access.

Tuesday September 29th -First day out of school

Good morning everyone! This is my first post. I am moving onto a sailboat with my family. We are going to Central America. On this blog I am going to write about my trip and all the things I explore and find. Here is where I will share them with you.

Today I found a snake. I looked at it very carefully and then went online and looked it up. I discovered it was Southern Ringneck. It looks like this.

Last week I went on a sailboat ride. It was a catamaran, that means it has two hulls. We stopped the boat in the middle of the ocean and jumped off into the water. Someone was watching out for sharks. He saw one and yelled," Get out of the water!" So we did.

I picked up some Seaweed and shook it, and out came a crab and a shrimp. This is called Sargassum. The crabs and baby shrimp attach to the seaweed and eat the algea that attach to it. They stay there until they are big enough to find food on their own.
